FAMOUS ROMANS
CRASSUS (MARCUS LICINIUS CRASSUS)
115-53 BC
Crassus was born into an illustrious family. He had
ancestors that were senators, consuls, praetors, censor, and
accomplished military men (vir triumphalis). One of the Licinii branches had also acquired great wealth. Crassus,
however, was raised in modest means but was able to
acquire a vast fortune through real estate speculation. He
was elected consul twice, he defeated Spartacus in the
field and was a member of the triumvirate with Caesar and
Pompey. Seeking military glory, he died campaigning in
Parthia in 53 BC.
