Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus was a prominent politician and military leader. He was elected Suffect Consul once and Dictator twice. His story was used by later Romans to illustrate the selfless patriotism of the old Romans.
Cincinnatus was born a Patrician. Like many other Patricians, he was an effective military man and a successful politician. Cincinnatus’ family was wealthy. His name, Cincinnatus, means “curly haired”. Like most members of his class, Cincinnatus was a conservative who opposed expansion of plebeian political rights.
