FAMOUS ROMANS
CICERO (MARCUS TULIUS CICERO)
106-43 BC
A new man (novus homo; the first in his family to hold
the office of consul). He was an outstanding orator and
an effective advocate. Cicero wrote incessantly,
committing to parchment many of his court cases after
the fact (In Verrem), writing books on diverse topics,
such as law, philosophy, oratory, friendship, etc. He led
the independent faction in the senate. It was he who
crafted and delivered several speeches (entitled
Philippicae) against Antony, an act which Antony never
forgave and resulted in Cicero’s proscription.
